{ Les fleurons d’Edgar }
No translation leaves Edgar without being revised first. When a reviser spots a particularly inspiring bit of translation, they can send it to our director of quality and training, who compiles them in an internal newsletter called Les fleurons d'Edgar. It’s a way for us to keep our
passion for translation burning bright and not get
bogged down in the more mundane constraints
of day-to-day work.
After a while, we thought that it might be a good idea to start sharing these compilations with the outside world. To inspire our fellow translators is one reason, sure, but it’s also about showing the general public how translation isn’t just about swapping out one word for another. We wanted to get the message across that machines can never replace the key human element in translation.
Translators also occasionally submit revision fleurons to spotlight a reviser who did a particularly great job at improving, simplifying or clarifying a translation. We post these as well, to show just how much thought and work goes into translation. There’s something truly impressive about seeing a “good translation” become an “even better translation.” It’s a lot more educational bang for your buck!
Translation is about both technical and artistic skill. But why just tell when you can show as well—precisely what our fleurons are for.
Enjoy!
